LEEDS UNITED IN CUP FINAL

Bradford Beaten in West Riding Senior Match

Last evening on the Elland Road ground, Leeds United defeated Bradford in the semi-final for the West Riding Senior Cup by five goals to three. The margin between the two teams at the finish rather flattered the visitors. On a ground made heavy by recent rain, play was more strenuous than clever. Leeds led at the interval by two goals to one, and had fully earned the slight margin. Bradford in the first half, were almost always fighting a losing battle. There was little or no sting about their attacks, mainly owing to the successful work of the United half backs. They dominated the situation to such a degree that Potts was not called upon to stop a shot until play had been running for twenty-five minutes. On the other hand the home forwards, mainly through the medium of Mitchell and Wainscoat, were frequently in close contact with Moody, who kept a good goal for the Park Avenue Club. Bradford commenced the second half in great form, and the longer they played the better they got, until it seemed that United would be run off their feet. They drew level and fell behind and then drew level again. United survived the shock, and in the later stages of the game, gave of their best, and were attacking when the final whistle blew. At the commencement play was by no means exhilarating. The sudden change from dry to wet conditions seemed to upset the players, but Leeds went to the front fairly early, through a goal scored by Wainscoat. United went further ahead after thirty-five minutes. The second goal came from a penalty taken by Roberts, who scored at the second attempt. Moody having parried his first shot. Three minutes from the crossover McLean shot a very smart goal for Bradford, the ball striking the far post and twisting into the net. Both McLean and Rhodes were nearly through for goals for Bradford in the first minute of the second half before the latter equalised at the end of seventeen minutes play. Bradford were now forcing United to play a purely defensive game, and seemed capable of taking the lead at any time. But it was United that got the next goal through Mitchell. Three minutes later McLean once more levelled the scores, but in the later stages Wainscoat scored two capital goals to make the issue certain for Leeds.

Teams: Leeds United: Potts; Roberts, Menzies; Stacey, Longden, Buck; Duggan, Keetley, Jennings, Wainscoat, Mitchell. Bradford: Moody: Reid, McCandless; Taylor, Matthews, Dickinson; Davis, McLean, Rhodes, Scott, Parris. Referee: A. Haworth, Blackburn. The final between Leeds United and Halifax Town will be played on Saturday at Valley Parade, Bradford. Kick-off at 3.15.

TOWN'S CUP FINAL

To Meet Leeds United at Valley Parade

Wainscoat's Hat-Trick Busts Bradford

By defeating Bradford at Elland Road last night, Leeds United reached the final of the West Riding Senior Cup competition in which they will meet Halifax Town next Saturday. It has been decided that this final shall be played on the Bradford City ground at Valley Parade in the afternoon and a keen struggle is foreshadowed for both clubs are anxious to carry off the trophy. This is the third ocasion that Halifax have reached the final hurdle since the war. They expect to be at full strength on Saturday. Last evening's game was quite an exciting affair. Rain had left the ground water-logged in the central portion. Leedsd had the advantage of the breeze in thefirst half and subjected the Bradford defence to considerable pressure in the early stages, though it is doubtful if Wainscoat would have been able to score the first goal, after nine minutes, if Moody had not misjudged a centre. Roberts added a second goal after thirty-five minutes from a penalty awarded against McCandless, but it was only at the second attempt that he beat the goalkeeper, who parried the first shot. The best goal of this half was a low left-foot shot from McLean, and after fifty-nine minutes Rhodes equalised. It was quite against the run of play in the second half when Mitchell recovered the lead for Leeds, but McLean squared the account once more. Two goals fro Wainscoat, the second two minutes from the end settled the issue in favour United. The Wainscoat-Mitchell wing was a vital factor of the match, for the inside-left, besides recording an an individual "hat-trick", made a lot of play for his partner.
